BODY CONTOURING

Tummy
Tuck

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is one of the most frequently performed procedures in plastic surgery. This operation addresses the problem of skin and muscle laxity in the abdominal area, which typically occurs after significant weight loss or pregnancy. The procedure delivers great results and is associated with a high level of patient satisfaction.

The Procedure

A full preoperative assessment is carried out upon admission to the clinic. Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes around 2 to 3 hours. Besides skin excess removal the problem of midline muscle laxity is also addressed using a special suture or mesh. At the end of the procedure, surgical drains are placed to prevent fluid accumulation. Postoperative pain is generally well managed with standard pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication.

About Abdominoplasty

Following the procedure, patients are advised to wear a compression garment for 4 to 6 weeks to support healing and optimise results. Mobilisation is encouraged early on, and most patients can return to work within approximately two weeks. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for around a month.

A mini abdominoplasty is a less extensive procedure, suitable for patients with minor skin laxity in the lower abdomen. In this case, only a small amount of excess skin is removed without repositioning of the umbilicus. This procedure has a shorter operating time and a faster recovery compared to a full abdominoplasty.

For individuals who have had significant weight loss, excess skin laxity may extend to the sides of the abdomen and even around the lower back. In such cases, the incisions can be extended laterally in order to remove the excess skin from these areas as well. Circumferential abdominoplasty requires a slightly longer recovery period but is recommended in cases where a more comprehensive body contouring result is desired.

Abdominoplasty Scar Placement

The placement of scars depends on the type of abdominoplasty performed:

  • Mini abdominoplasty: The scar is smaller and positioned low on the abdomen, similar to a caesarean section scar.
  • Full abdominoplasty: The scar extends horizontally across the lower abdomen, reaching from one side to the other, and is designed to remain concealed beneath the underwear.
  • Fleur de Lis abdominoplasty: In cases of significant weight loss, a vertical scar along the midline of the abdomen is added to the horizontal incision to allow for the removal of additional excess skin.

What You Need to Know

Possible complications include infection, delayed wound healing (particularly in smokers), haematoma, seroma, and temporary or, in rare cases, permanent numbness in the treated area. Sensation typically returns gradually over time.

While initial results are noticeable immediately, the final outcome takes shape over a period of 3 to 6 months as swelling subsides and the scars mature.

The results of an abdominoplasty are permanent, provided that a stable weight is maintained and a healthy lifestyle is followed.

The cost varies depending on the extent of the procedure required and the specific technique used. A full assessment by a plastic surgeon is necessary to determine the final price.
