FACIAL SURGERY

Eyelid Surgery
(Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty is the surgical procedure that addresses the sagging skin of the eyelids. As we age, the skin and other structures of the eyelids loosen, leading to the appearance of “droopy eyelids” and a tired, aged look. During blepharoplasty, the plastic surgeon removes excess skin and/or fat from the upper or lower eyelids, depending on the case, offering a rested and refreshed appearance.

The Procedure

Upper blepharoplasty refers to the upper eyelids and is typically performed under local anesthesia. During the procedure, a thin strip of skin is removed and, if necessary, a small amount of fat is also removed. The incision is made on the natural fold of the eyelid, ensuring that the scar is very discreet. The procedure lasts about an hour and does not require an overnight stay at the clinic. Lower Blepharoplasty involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the lower eyelids, correcting the unwanted “eye bags.” It is usually performed under local anesthesia and lasts about one hour. Upper & Lower Blepharoplasty: When the problem is present in both the upper and lower eyelids, it is possible to perform both upper and lower blepharoplasty simultaneously. In this case, the duration of the procedure is longer, and light sedation may be necessary for greater comfort. The patient does not need to stay overnight and can return home a few hours after the operation.

Recovery from Blepharoplasty

  • For the first 2-3 days, there may be swelling and bruising, so rest at home is recommended.
  • Stitches are removed after 5-6 days.
  • Return to daily activities usually after 7-10 days.
  • Sun exposure should be avoided for the first few weeks in order to prevent skin  discoloration.
  • Initially, the scars are reddish and more visible but they can easily be covered with makeup.
  • Within a few months, these scars fade and become almost invisible.

Incisions in Blepharoplasty

The skin of the eyelids is very thin, which results in excellent quality scars after blepharoplasty. Specifically:

  • In upper blepharoplasty, the removal of excess skin results in a very fine scar in the natural fold of the eyelid, which is not visible when the eyes are open.
  • In lower blepharoplasty, the incision is made at the upper edge of the lower eyelid, just beneath the lash line. This way, the final scar becomes almost invisible.

DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS?

What You Need to Know

No, the procedure is performed with local anesthesia, and the patient experiences mild discomfort but no pain.

A couple of weeks after the operation you will be able to see the early results, while the final outcome is fully evident a few months later, when the skin has fully adapted to the new conditions.

Blepharoplasty effectively corrects skin laxity at the time of the surgery. However, the natural aging process continues, and there may be a need for a supplementary skin excision after at least ten years.

Blepharoplasty is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. The most common temporary side effects are swelling and bruising, which subside within a few days.

It is recommended to avoid makeup for 7 days after the procedure.

The cost of blepharoplasty depends on whether the surgery involves the upper, the lower, or both eyelids. The price is also dependent on the type of anesthesia. The final price is determined after a clinical assessment.
