BREAST SURGERY

Breast
Reduction

Breast reduction is the surgical procedure that achieves both reduction and lifting of the breasts. The presence of very large breasts causes various functional and psychological problems in women, such as neck and back pain, as well as skin inflammation beneath the breast. Additionally, in some cases, it may cause issues with social interactions or sexual life, affecting the woman’s quality of life. Breast reduction helps address these problems by offering relief and improving appearance.

The Procedure

Breast reduction takes approximately 2-3 hours and is always performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, excess skin, glandular tissue and fat are removed. The nipple is repositioned up to its natural position. At the end of the surgery, drains are placed in both breasts to prevent hematoma. These are usually removed after 3-4 days. The patient remains at the clinic for one nigh. Postoperative pain is mild and managed effectively with common painkillers.

Recovery

After breast reduction, returning to work typically happens after 10 days, although heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 2-3 weeks. All stitches are absorbable and do not need to be removed. The patient should wear a special bra for 4-6 weeks post-surgery to ensure the breasts take on the desired shape and to reduce postoperative swelling more quickly.

Breast Reduction Scar Placement

Breast reduction techniques result in a circular scar around the nipple and a vertical scar extending from it. In most cases of medium and large breast reductions, an additional scar is created in the inframammary fold. Depending on the technique, the breast reduction results in the following postoperative scars:

  • Vertical (Lollipop)
  • Anchor-type (Wise pattern)

DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS?

What You Need to Know

Breast reduction does not cause severe discomfort. Postoperative pain is mild and is effectively managed with common painkillers.

Return to work usually happens after about 10 days, but physical exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 2-3 weeks.

As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection, hematoma, or poor wound healing. However, these complications are not very common and are significantly reduced when the patient complies with pre- and postoperative care, especially by stopping smoking, and when the surgery is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon.

It is suggested to postpone breast reduction if you plan to have children in the near future. The procedure is typically scheduled about a year after the end of breastfeeding, as the size and shape of the breasts may change during pregnancy and lactation.

Breast reduction may affect breastfeeding in some cases, but most women are able to breastfeed normally. The plastic surgeon will inform you about the possible effects on lactation and the appropriate time to undergo the surgery if you plan to breastfeed in the future.

The cost of Breast Reduction varies depending on the extent of the concern and the surgical interventions required. The final price is determined following a clinical assessment.
